Meatco’s project of setting up 70 multi-purpose crush pens is already showing progress.

These pens are being set up in the Northern Communal Areas (NCA). Cattle in certain areas are gathered and loaded for the market for the first time in 20 years.

About 80 cattle were gathered three days after the completion of the Uutsathima pen in Omusati. They were loaded for slaughtering at Meatco’s abattoir in Oshikati.

Patrick Liebenberg, Regional Livestock Procurement Manager for the NCA at Meatco, said that farmers living in the rural areas now have the opportunity to assemble and load cattle at the kraal because it is near their villages.

It is said that this project will be a great success story in terms of livestock marketing in the NCA.

Meatco is facilitating the development of these pens with N$13 million availed by the European Union.

Twelve pens will still be set up in the Kunene Region, ten in Oshana, nine in Ohangwena, 19 in the Kavango and two in the Tsumkwe-west area.
