After improved rainfall in the second part of the 2009/10 crop season, it is believed that an above average harvest can be expected in the north central regions. According to Matheus Ndjodhi, Senior Agricultural Economist in the Ministry, the Oshana Region would have the highest production, 46 percent above average. The latest food security report of the Agriculture Ministry is expecting a 40 percent above average harvest in the Oshikoto Region and 35 percent in Omusati. Although the Ohangwena Region showed a decrease of 12 percent below average, it is 65 percent better than last season’s harvests. An estimated 313 100 hectares will be used for course grain production, consisting of white maize, sorghum, pearl millet and wheat. It is expected at 155 100 tons for the year. White maize was recorded at a 48 percent increase above average, 10 percent higher than in the previous season. A 46 percent above average increase is expected for pearl millet and sorghum, 133 percent higher than in the last season. Estimates for the Caprivi and Kavongo don’t look too good due to floodings that took place in the areas. The estimated production in the Caprivi is 32 percent below average and 22 percent lower than in the previous season. Although a 26 percent below average has been recorded for combined cereal production in the Kavango Region, it is still 15 percent higher than in the last season.
