Climate change workshops that focus in consulting and raising awareness started on Monday in Oshakati.

A workshop will also be held today that will be attended by delegates from the Caprivi, Kavango, Oshikoto and Otjozondjupa. On 26 July, the last workshop will be held for delegates the Karas, Erongo, Hardap, Omaheke and Khomas regions.

Clemens Kashuupulwa, Oshana Regional Governor, said that the Government has already taken a number of measures to adapt to climate change. He also mentioned that this policy was long overdue and Namibia’s northern regions are more threatened with consistent drought and flooding.

The biggest priority for this development initiative is to decrease the impact that is caused by the unfavorable climate change and weather conditions. If this policy is implemented successfully, it would greatly contribute to minimize the exposure and vulnerability of people to hazardous weather conditions.

Dr Kalumbi Shangula, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, said on behalf of the chief control warden in the ministry, Chrispin Nkonkwena that evidence proofed that the global climate is changing. Over the past thousand years, the earth has warmed about 0.75 degrees. A huge threat to climate change is human activity.

Shangula also said that poor countries, especially in Africa, are the most vulnerable to the negative effects.
