Young scientists at the Gobabeb Training and Research Centre (GRTC) have taken it upon themselves to look at ways to reduce the long-term impact of mine activities.

More mines are opened in the Namib in search of uranium deposits. The three researchers presented their findings in June to an audience of 25 people. That included representatives of three mining companies, an environmental officer of the Walvis Bay municipality and two United Nations documentary filmmakers.

The Acting Manager at Gobabeb, Dr Theo Wassenaar, said that the programme has been incited because little is known about how to restore functional ecosystems in the Namib. The students had to consider topics that had a direct implication to the environmental offices at the mines.

Throughout the Gobabeb Training and Research Internship Programme (GTRIP), the associates provided instructions on topics. This ranged from a three-week data analysis course to a three-day brief on geographic information systems (GIS).

After a great demand, it was decided to do a follow-up presentation and it will be scheduled for next month. A mechanical engineer with Swakop Uranuim, Koos Calitz, said that people perceive restoration as not urgent but restoration ecology needs all the exposure it can get. Furthermore he said that it will be ten or 20 years from now that this information will be needed.
