The Managing Director of Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR), Dr Tobie Aupindi, received the award of Africa’s Tourism Personality of the Year.

The Africa and Indian Ocean awards ceremony of the World Travel Awards (WTA) took place last week in Johannesburg. This was the first time that the awards were held in Africa.

Aupindi was in the running together with Chief Executive Officer from South African Airways, Siza Mzimela, Sun International’s CEO, David Coutts-Trotter, Chairman of the Protea Hotel group, Otto Stehlik and the Southern Sun Hotel’s MD, David Wood. The NRW was also voted as Namibia’s leading tourism brand at the event.

Graham Cooke, President of the WTA, was happy that the international travel industry voted for Aupindi. Although the NWR is not where it should be, it has come a long way, now being featured prominently in Europe’s premier brochures. The tour operators in Europe are definitely supporting the NRW and are happy about the progress that has been made.

The winners of this awards ceremony will now be competing at the World Travel Awards Grand Finale, which will take place in London in November.

Guests that joined the event included senior professionals in the tourism industry, tourism leaders, government representatives, and international business leaders. This was the 17th year that the awards were held.
