The National Science, Engineering and Technology (NAMSCI) Week started last week at the University of Namibia (UNAM) and took place until last Friday.

The theme for this year’s science week was “My environment my treasure.” This theme was in line with the celebration of the International Year of Biodiversity.

Although everyone is linked with biodiversity and it forms an important part of nature, not everyone is aware just how a vital role it plays in everyday life. According to the website www.cbd.int/2010/welcome/, biodiversity plays a vital role in sustaining life on earth. Human activities like overexploitation, pollution and converting land, with all its natural resources, for agricultural purposes, is the cause that a lot of the biodiversity is lost.

People rely on the diversity to provide food, fuel, medicines and other essentials but nobody seems to realise that we need to protect the environment in order to do so. Most human activities are irreversible and once the natural resources are lost, nothing can be done to restore them again.

This is a unique opportunity to increase the understanding of what important role the environment has in our everyday life.

This NAMSCI project of the Ministry of Education is in collaboration with UNAM and Polytechnic of Namibia. The aim was to promote awareness and appreciate science and technology in a fun way.
