For three weeks now, the MS Westerdam passenger vessel, was anchored in Walvis Bay for repairs and improvements. This luxury ship is now set to depart to Cape Town early next week.

It was planned to act as a floating hotel during the Soccer World Cup, but there was a lack of interest and it will now only be used to transport people. About 100 passengers will leave for Cape Town, mostly German tourists.

During these three weeks in Walvis Bay, the crew of 800 was taken on a variety of tours, including dolphin and desert tours. Before departing, a charity event was held on Thursday at The Raft Restaurant. The cook onboard prepared a feast for the guests and all monies were donated to charity. The entertainment crew will also be performing at The Raft this weekend.

The ship is 285m long and can accommodate 1 848 passengers. The Westerdam is decorated with paintings and sculptures, which portray the Dutch heritage but the luxury doesn’t end here. Passengers can also enjoy the casino, video arcade, a bar, club and theaters. Even the bedrooms are spacious, with most staterooms having their own private verandah. A week on this ship will cost around N$115 000 per person.
