Representatives of Doro !Nawas Conservancy and Wilderness Safaris held a meeting at Doro Nawas Camp on Friday, 25 March 2010, the first since the Doro !Nawas Conservancy elected its new Chairman, Amingo Honneb.

One of Honneb’s goals as Chairman of the Conservancy is to promote community tourism as a means of protecting and conserving wildlife in the Doro !Nawas Conservancy.

This goal is very much in line with the relationship between the Conservancy and Wilderness Safaris, who signed a shareholders agreement in 2009 that further strengthened their commitment to successful business initiatives that benefit the local community and help to conserve Namibia’s wildlife and wild places.

What began as a landlord-tenant relationship has evolved into one where the Conservancy not only receives a land lease fee from Doro Nawas Lodge (Pty) Ltd as a percentage of revenue but is also an equity shareholder in the company. The venture is a pioneering project that supports Vision 2030 goals set to ensure effective management of the nation's natural and human resources critical to economic development, including much-needed training and employment opportunities in rural areas.

In a recent survey, 78% of Doro Nawas Camp employees expressed a belief that tourism helps to reduce poverty in the area.
