Travel News - Latest News - News Update - Lucky – the unusual celebrity

Namibia has a new celebrity, and a very unusual one at that. Lucky not only has an amputated leg; she is also a cheetah.

Lucky, who lives at the N/a’an ku sê Wildlife Sanctuary featured in the recent Volkswagen advert along with the sanctuary’s owner and popular conservationist, Marlice van Vuuren, has become a new celebrity.

When Lucky arrived at the sanctuary at the beginning of 2009, one of her legs had been badly injured in an illegal gin trap and it unfortunately had to be amputated. Her story is not unusual amongst African wildlife, but Lucky is different in the sense that she used her disadvantage to show others (animals and humans alike) that it is still possible to enjoy the free feeling of moving through the wild with the wind in her fur.

The aim at N/a’an ku sê is to rehabilitate and release as many of the animals as possible back to the wild. Only those who would not survive are kept at the sanctuary. Visit the sanctuary to meet Lucky and other aspiring celebrity friends (I can unfortunately not guarantee an autograph, but you’re welcome to take a photo). (MvR)
