Travel News - New Places - New NWR lodge in western Etosha for 2010
New from Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR) and expected to be finished in
the last quarter of 2010, Dolomite Camp will be the first lodge on the
western side of Etosha National Park – an area previously excluded from
tourism.
As the name suggests, the new camp will be located among the dolomite
outcrops of the pristine western Etosha National Park, offering an
intimate experience of one of the most scenic areas of Etosha. It is
being developed in an ecofriendly manner from natural materials that
blend into the landscape, and will consist of reception, lounge, bar and
restaurant area, and a walkway leading to 25 thatched, en-suite chalets
– five of which are premier suites – nestled amongst the rocky
outcrops.
NWR is a state-owned enterprise, mandated to run the tourism
facilities within the protected areas of Namibia. Dolomite Camp will be
NWR’s fifth camp in the Etosha National Park. According to the NWR,
Etosha’s tourism potential is currently underutilised and the overnight
carrying capacity could be increased without detracting from the current
tourism experience.
No official information has been released about the fourth public
entrance gate to western Etosha. At time of going to print it was not
yet established what the new gate would be called and when it would be
opened to the public, although is expected to be the old Galton Gate
that leads to the Otjovasandu Ministry of Environment and Tourism (MET)
warden station. When opened, the gate will link the Skeleton Coast Park
in the Kunene Region and Etosha, the biggest tourist attraction in
Namibia. This new route will encourage tourism traffic through
communities bordering on that side of the park, resulting in growth and
developmental benefits. (MvR).
