Travel News - Industry News - School kids discover tourism
Tourism and hospitality – to many young Namibians these concepts are still strange. In an effort to make ‘Tourism everyone’s business’, a joint effort between the Namibia Tourism Board (NTB), Hospitality Association of Namibia (HAN), Tour and Safari Association (TASA), First National Bank (FNB), and City of Windhoek (CoW) brought tourism closer to about 30 Grade 9 scholars of Concordia College.
The youngsters were invited to spend the morning at the Windhoek Country Club and Resort, and learn more about what tourism and hospitality entail, and which career opportunities await those keen and passionate enough to venture into this exciting international service industry. At the Country Club, these students were able to witness the buzz and excitement during a normal day at a hotel reception, with guests and groups checking out, new guests arriving, breakfast tables being cleared, and rooms being cleaned and prepared for new arrivals.
Apart from motivational speeches and information shared by the partners, the group was addressed by the City of Windhoek’s Tourism Division team: Dina Uanguta, Director of Camelthorn Safaris, and Tony Boucher, General Manager of the Windhoek Country Club and Resort. Tony advised, “In tourism, we work with the dreams of people, and continuously strive to exceed the expectations of our guests!”
During the next six months, five more high schools in Windhoek, namely Centaurus, Jan Jonker Afrikaner, Eldorado, Hage Geingob and Augustineum, will send a selection of their Grade 9 scholars on similar tourism days at various hotels and pensions in Windhoek.
The Junior Councillors Tourism Awareness Programme replaces the previous Teens in Tourism Programme of the City of Windhoek.
