The budget of the Ministry of Environment and Tourism for the 2010/11 financial year amounts to N$347 927 000. The amount of N$248 197 000 was allocated for its operational budget and N$99 730 000 for the development budget for seven programmes. This represents an increase of 14% on last year’s budget of N$305 648 000.
The Minister of Environment and Tourism, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, noted that these programmes would maintain growth in the tourism sector, increase income for the state, and create jobs. Under the programme Wildlife and Protected Area Management, N$136 558 000 was made available to: implement biodiversity management and operation of conservation areas and national parks; human wildlife conflict management; management of Transfrontier Conservation Areas; and biodiversity brochures for parks.
Under the Protection and Management of Key Species and Natural Resources, a total of N$18 431 000 was earmarked for research and monitoring; the development of species management plans; game capture and translocations; trade, permit control, CITES and participation in other international conventions.
Further allocations Community-based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM) and Tourism received an amount of N$18 091 000 to support CBNRM programmes and assist 59 conservancies directly. Under the Regulation of Environmental Protection and Sustainable Resource Manage- ment programme, an amount of N$19 788 000 will be used to expand the institutional capacity of the evaluation of the environment. Tourism Development was allocated N$59 673 000 for the Namibian Tourism Board and Namibia Wildlife Resorts; tourism enterprise developments; tourism research, statistics and awareness.
Gaming received a total of N$1 700 000 for management and inspection of gambling, casinos and lotteries.
An amount of N$93 486 000 was budgeted for Administration, Co-ordination and Investment. This money will go towards development and improvement of conservation areas and national parks. http://www.mof.gov.na/budget.htm
