The fact that the Bateleur probably has the shortest tail of all the raptors doesn’t mean that its flying ability is hampered in any way. In fact, it is one of the most dexterous and able flyers in the raptor fraternity.

Koos Kombuis, the well-known Afrikaans songwriter, once wrote lyrics proclaiming that a student’s main pastime was doing nothing and talking nonsense, although he was a bit more explicit. Watching the Openbills standing on the banks along the big rivers in the north, I cannot but think about the student thing of doing nothing.

Since the Lappet-faced Vulture with its wingspan of over two metres is the largest of all Namibian vultures, you can understand why Peter Bridgeford and his co-workers are so concerned about its well-being. You will most probably come across some of these vultures when driving through the Namib Desert.

Water Thick-knee

The thick-knee is one of my favourite birds to photograph because of its huge eyes, and, more importantly, the fact that it can stand stock-still for hours. (I think this is the reason for their thick knees, probably an early arthritic change in the knee joint from standing so long.)
